North London is a great place to live and Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust is a great place to grow your career. The Trust prides itself on its commitment to excellence in the following areas:
- Partnership Development - creating networks of care around patient's' needs with other providers, so that we deliver top quality care.
- Recovery Focused Care - focusing on what patients can do; helping them to get as well as they can for as long as they can, so they can return to as normal a life as possible.
- Culturally Appropriate Care - recognising the diversity of people's cultural backgrounds and reflecting that in the way we work and the people who work for us.
The quality of our clinical services, as measured in local and national targets, has shown a consistent improvement. We are working towards becoming a Foundation Trust early in 2010, with all the benefits that will bring in terms of staff involvement and freedom to innovate.
We operate from over 40 locations across the three boroughs; four are based at large hospital sites, but most are small units in the community. Our 2,600 staff provided care and support to over 19,000 people in 2007-08. In fact we had around 700 in-patient beds in use at any one time through the year. Our annual income in 2007-08 was £169 million.
The services we provide
The Trust is the principal provider of a comprehensive range of mental health services to the people of the London Boroughs of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey in North London. We also provide some specialist services to a wider area.
Our main purpose is to improve the mental health and wellbeing of people in North London and to provide them with effective and modern mental health care.
Mental ill-health can affect people at any age, so we provide services for children and adolescents, adults of working age and for older people. We have expertise in specialist areas including:
- The North London Forensic Service, which cares for people whose offending behaviour is associated with mental health problems, so that they can be treated in medium or low secure accommodation as part of their rehabilitation.
- The St Ann's Eating Disorders Service which provides in-patient and community care for people across North London and beyond, with anorexia, bulimia and other eating disorders.
- The Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit is a unique service supporting people whose brain injuries have caused mental health problems.
- The Northgate and New Beginnings adolescent inpatient services helps young people with acute mental health problems onto the path of recovery.
- The Halliwick Centre is a leading centre for the care and rehabilitation of people with personality disorders.
Working in partnership to promote mental wellbeing
We have close working relationships with our three local authorities and primary care trusts. We work together in assessing local needs, to ensure our core services and future developments are closely aligned and integrated with their plans. Our partnerships extend to over 100 statutory, private and independent organisations. These include social services, education and other local authority departments, the voluntary sector, prisons, universities and other health care providers. The relationships cover service provision, local regeneration, public health, workforce development and community safety. Senior Finance Department staff play a key role in supporting partnership working.
The areas we serve
Our patch stretches from the open parkland and small farms north of Barnet and Enfield, to the regenerated industrial estates in the Lea valley in Edmonton and Tottenham in the south and east and the Victorian suburbs of Finchley and Hornsey in the south west.
We serve a population of some 800,000 people. Our local population is growing in size, becoming more diverse and ageing along national demographic lines.
These factors will increase demand for mental health services. Current projections are that by 2030, there will be an overall rise of up to 15% in our local population - significantly higher than the London average.
The ethnic and social mix of the three boroughs is different, but there are some general trends which have an impact on our services. While there is some variation between groups and boroughs, Black, Asian and other minority ethnic populations are growing as a proportion of the total population. In some areas, it is likely to reach a 50:50 ratio by 2010. There are over 200 different languages spoken across the three boroughs and significant numbers of people are refugees and travellers.
Parts of our local population are significantly younger than the London average, especially in Haringey, where nearly three-quarters are under 45 and only 10% are over 65. In the long-term, the population of all three boroughs will continue to age. The most dramatic increase will be in the numbers of people of 80 years and older. Increasing access to mental health services for older people through partnerships with local authority social services and the voluntary sector will therefore become increasingly important. This is why we are developing stronger partnerships now.
