Chief Accountant

Advertised is a Chief Accountant role within a Local Authority in Essex.  

Working closely with council members and other relevant organisations, your role will contribute to the delivery of corporate objectives and policies and the production for the annual service plan for financial services.

As chief Accountant you will report directly to the Financial Services Manager delivering financial and accountancy services to the council.  You will also be responsible for the management, training and development of a team of 6 members of staff.

Candidates need to be qualified to at least AAT standard in accounting with experience working within Local Government central accounting departments.  You will need to have strong communication skills and work effectively with a range of senior members of staff.

Key responsibilities include;

• Closure of the council’s revenue and capital accounts, up to and including the annual Statement of Accounts and liaison with external auditors
• To be responsible for the interpretation and implementation of new legislative requirements
• To deputise for the Financial Service Manager
• Assist in the completion and dispatch of grant claims and statistical returns
• Assist in the council’s treasury management activities, including investment and borrowing decisions
• To have overall control of the financial management system and assist in its development

The candidate will demonstrate a creative talent and use initiative to move the job along in a positive way.  They will also exhibit the ability to communicate well with others and established open and constructive relationships
