Head of Medical Workforce – (Band 8B)

Head of Medical Workforce

Band 8B

Location – Reading/Hybrid

Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest general hospital Foundation Trusts in the country. We employ around 5,500 staff, serving a population of around one million people at six sites across Berkshire and its borders, providing acute medical and surgical services alongside specialist services such as cancer, dialysis, and eye surgery. Results from the recent NHS Staff Survey show we are among the top performing Acute Trusts nationally. We scored particularly well in areas covering patient care, for having a ‘compassionate culture’ and for giving our staff ‘autonomy and control’ to succeed.

We are now recruiting a new Head of Medical Workforce to oversee all aspects of Medical HR and Recruitment. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Medical Workforce professional, with proven experience within an NHS Medical Workforce Team, to take on the responsibilities and challenges of leading a combined team of Medical HR and Medical Staffing specialists in a large District General Hospital. We’d also welcome expressions of interest from people who are experienced Medical Staffing leads but don’t have such extensive experience of generalist medical workforce issues, as this role provides an excellent opportunity to develop and thrive in a supportive and values driven organisation.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Employee Relations – the Trust prides itself on its strong employee relations and as part of this role you will support the Medical Director in dealing with any employee relations issues and ensuring adherence to ‘Maintaining High Professional Standards’ (MHPS). You will also work alongside the Local Negotiating Committee (LNC) to ensure policies for medical colleagues are fit for purpose and, where issues may arise, that they are appropriately addressed.
  • Resourcing & Retention – you will support the Trust’s robust and proactive recruitment programme to attract doctors of the highest calibre to ensure we continue to deliver outstanding healthcare services to our population
  • Team Management and Budget Management – you will manage the Medical Workforce team to ensure we continue delivering high levels of service to the Trust, within agreed resources, to support the delivery of outstanding patient care
  • Planning – you will work alongside the Trust’s medical leaders to provide a high level of support to our medical workforce, enacting any local and national changes and developments. This will also involve you playing a key role in the Trust’s workforce planning and development agenda.
  • Medical Job Planning and Rota Management – you will work alongside Medical and Service Leaders to ensure job planning and rota development/management meets the needs of the services provided at the Trust, whilst also ensuring our doctors can carry out their education and development commitments.
  • Medical Terms and Conditions – you will be alert to developments in Medical Terms and Conditions and ensure the Trust stays compliant with any changes.

The Closing Date for applications will be 5pm on Friday 31st March 2023. If you would like more information, or to apply, please contact or by telephoning 07554 443883
