Deputy Director of Workforce Development

Key Working Relationships:

Medical Director and Assistant Medical Directors, Divisional Managers, Clinical Directors, Educational Leads, PGMDE, GMC, NCAS, MPTS

Role Summary

The role of the Senior Medical Workforce manager is to provide leadership and expertise in all matters pertaining to the medical and dental workforce. They will work with colleagues across London and further afield to design approaches for the implementation of wider NHS initiatives ensuring that KCH is at the forefront of policy development.

They will provide expertise across the Trust on medical and dental workforce terms and conditions, employee relations, job planning, appraisals, revalidation, rota design, medical and dental education and training, medical workforce transformation, workforce planning,

They will take a lead in the development and implementation of innovative approaches to the development and deployment of the medical and dental workforce.

Infection Control Statement

These requirements are set out in the National Code of Practice on Infection Control and in local policies and procedures which will be made clear during your induction and subsequent refresher training. These standards must be strictly complied with at all times.

Person Specification

Key Criteria Essential Desirable

Education & Qualifications

  • Degree level education
  • Masters qualification


  • Extensive experience in managing medical workforce employee relations and terms and conditions issues
  • Extensive experience working at a senior level in a large complex organisation
  • Record of achievement in innovation and workforce transformation
  • Record of achieving effective change management
  • Experience in the management and training a team of direct reports.

Skills, Abilities and Knowledge

  • Detailed knowledge of M&D terms and conditions, employment law as it applies to M&D staff,  M&D New Deal and EWTD
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to develop productive working relationships
  • Ability to work independently to manage highly complex and difficult situations where there is conflict
  • Ability to influence internal and external stakeholders in the development of organisational structures and processes
  • Evidence of a collaborative and consultative work style
  • Ability to manage initiatives within financial restraints and delivery to deadlines
  • Highly effective written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrates behaviours in accordance with the King’s values at all times.
