They are now seeking a hands-on dynamic technology leader with a passion for driving cultural change and embedding new ways of working within their software development teams as their new Head of Software Development and Delivery .
The role

University of Sussex are looking for a technical leader to mentor, grow and develop their software delivery team, and introduce a new SDLC roadmap for the future.

The Head of Software Development and Delivery is accountable for the successful delivery of software improvements that are critical to the achievement of the University’s strategic goals, spanning education, student experience and core professional service functions.

This role is an exciting opportunity for an aspiring IT leader to further their career, you will work closely with a variety of stakeholders to drive forward their digital transformation journey, and to promote an operating model built on Agile principles.

You will oversee all software development, testing and integration teams and develop a Software Development Strategy that places loosely coupled API-driven micro-services, Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and Machine Learning (ML) technologies at its heart. You will also be responsible for ensuring new SDLC practices deliver effective ways of working

Essential Criteria

  • Extensive knowledge of professional software development practices and associated technologies.
  • Strong knowledge of at least two of the following programming languages: Java, JavaScript, Python, C++, C# and PHP.
  • Knowledge of Oracle Forms and Oracle Databases (desirable)
  • Knowledge of database development including PLSQL, T-SQL, MySQL or NoSQL (Desirable)
  • Good knowledge of SDLCs and embedding working practices into teams
  • Knowledge of integration patterns/practices and API management
  • Demonstrable experience of transforming development teams into Agile delivery

This is a position for a highly motivated problem solver, a hands-on technical leader and Subject Matter Expert (SME), leading a team of 10 – 15 staff (currently using technologies such as PHP, Python and Boomi amongst others) which may at any time include permanent, fixed-term and/or contract staff associated with specific projects.

You will be provided with a host of development opportunities and this role provides a great foundation for those who aspire to progress further in IT management in the coming years. It is a role that will drive a new operating model into University of Sussex and will provide significant influence over the transformation of IT services.
