Our Finance Directorate plays a key role in enabling the University to meet these objectives. In recognition of the increasing scale and complexity of the University’s activities we are seeking to recruit a Tax Manager.
Key responsibilities will include:
• Develop a tax strategy covering the tax affairs of the University and its subsidiary undertakings to minimise the University’s irrecoverable VAT and optimise other tax liabilities.
• Initiate new proposals to the Director of Finance, to optimise the tax liabilities of the University, whilst taking into account the University’s risk appetite.
• Identify and advise on matters of international tax in respect of collaborations with overseas universities, including implications for staff.
• Ensure that internal controls are adequate and promote tax compliance across all University processes and systems.
• Provide technical tax expertise to support the day to day business, e.g. by supporting the Tax and Treasury Accountant on the VAT treatment of specific transactions, of the Payroll Manager in assessing employment status; and answering general tax questions for other departments.
• Manage the use of external tax advisors to ensure the University obtains best value from its advisers to ensure they meet the University's business needs.
Act as the lead contact for the university in dealing with HMRC
The successful applicant will be a qualified accountant or possibly an ex HMRC employee with extensive taxation experience. University experience and a detailed understanding of the HEI regulatory and funding environment is highly desirable although may not be essential if the applicant has extensive experience in other sectors. Strong technical accounting skills are a prerequisite.
