Interim Director of Seafarer Learning
The Marine Society & Sea Cadets (MSSC) is a vibrant and growing charity that helps launch young people for life today whatever they want to do after school and helps seafarers to keep learning all their lives. With an income of £16m and a further £7m raised through our 400 federated operating units, the Sea Cadets delivers life-changing nautical adventure to 14,500 young people, engaging 9,000 committed volunteers and staff throughout the UK. Alongside this we provide a wide range of personal and professional development opportunities for thousands of seafarers wherever they are in the world through the Marine Society.
The Marine Society provides crew libraries to ships around the world, operates a specialist book sales service and delivers a range of distance learning support for the maritime sector, from GCSEs and A Levels to degree level, together with a range of bespoke courses. We also award scholarships and run a busy advice and guidance service for seafarers looking for professional and personal development.
Following the successful introduction of two new digital services in addressing more global needs of seafarers and interest in creation of further services to support career development, we wish to appoint an interim Director of Seafarer Learning to help us devise our strategy for the further development of the Marine Society over the coming years. Reporting to the Chief Executive as a member of the senior management team, alongside developing this strategy, you will lead all activity for the Marine Society aspects of the charity
What we are looking for:• Excellent management skills to lead and develop a committed team
• Strong experience of delivering adult education, including through distance learning
• Very good understanding of the OFSTED inspection regime and SFA funding
• The strategic awareness and business acumen to review our current services and identify new opportunities for growth and development
• Previous experience of the maritime sector is not essential
• We will consider full or part time with potential for some remote working.
