On 26th September 2018, Simon Law, Co-Founder of Morgan Law, was invited to speak to an audience of Special Boat Service (SBS) service personnel who are in the process of leaving the Armed Forces within the next six to twelve months.
The event was organised by the Special Boat Service Association (SBSA) and was designed to provide the out-going service personnel with a much greater understanding of the career options that will be presented to them in ‘Civvy Street.’
The Special Boat Service (SBS) is the special forces unit of the Naval Service of the United Kingdom and are the sister unit of the Special Air Service (SAS).
It is widely known that service personnel can often find the transition from the Armed Forces to civilian life particularly difficult due to the vast differences between the two environments, which is why more assistance, through workshops and events such as this, are being made available.
The audience were exposed to a broad range of topics and discussions, including:
- Transitioning from military life to civilian
- How to apply for jobs - Application processes, Employers action i.e. making the initial sift, what makes a cv stand out, interview techniques – what really works?
- Interviewing – What sorts of interview are there? What is the ‘standard’ interview process? What can you do to prepare? What should you do (or not do) at an interview? When does an interview begin?
- Transition phase - The lead up to, and transition phase, what didn’t you know i.e. basics such as registering for a GP, Electoral roll etc. What you did/didn’t do, what would you differently?
- Industry Insight – Financial sector, what’s included, different departments, skills involved.
- Elevator Pitch / Candidates 5 minutes – Each candidate is to give an overview of the skill sets they have and how they translate across to the civilian world
Simon highlighted how beneficial and necessary these types of events are:
“The afternoon was both fascinating and rewarding. It was also quite humbling listening to the individual stories and experiences of these incredible range of individuals.
What repeatedly came across were the extensive leadership skills that they had all developed, plus their ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines on their various missions.
However, it was also very apparent how unaware they were of the opportunities outside of the military, and equally how effectively their skills could transition into roles within operations, cyber, financial crime and compliance, to name just a few.
Overall, I felt honoured to have represented Morgan Law at the event and I hope that we will be able to help the SBSA and similar associations in the future.”
